So, you’re thinking about moving to Sarasota. Maybe you’re retiring, downsizing as an empty nester, planning a second home, escaping cold winters as a snowbird, or even working remotely as a young professional. Whatever your reason, you’re not alone—people from across the country are flocking to Sarasota. And it’s easy to see why.
That said, there’s a lot of information (and misinformation) out there about life here. To cut through the noise, I’ve pulled together the six most common questions people ask me when considering a move to Sarasota—along with the realities you should know before making the leap.
“Best” is subjective, but let’s start with the basics. Sarasota and Manatee Counties make up this metropolitan area of over one million residents, sitting along Florida’s Gulf Coast. Within these counties are cities and planned communities like Sarasota, Venice, Bradenton, and Lakewood Ranch, plus the barrier islands—Longboat Key, Siesta Key, Lido Key, and Anna Maria Island.
Here’s what to expect in 2025:
Sarasota: Average home price $721,000. Known for its stunning beaches, cultural scene, and lively downtown.
Venice: Average home price $452,000. Smaller, charming, with a slightly older demographic and fast-growing areas like Wellen Park.
Bradenton: Average home price $493,000. Popular with boaters and close to Tampa/St. Pete.
Lakewood Ranch: Average home price $786,000. The fastest-growing master-planned community in the U.S.
Barrier Islands: Average home price $1.68 million. Luxury living with postcard-worthy views.
With such variety, your choice really comes down to budget, amenities, and lifestyle. Do you want a resort-style community with pools and clubhouses, or a quiet, low-fee neighborhood tucked among mature trees? Think about what you want within 10–20 minutes of your home, and work with a local expert to narrow your options.
In Sarasota and across Florida, about 70% of homes are in HOA (Homeowners Association) communities. Opinions are mixed—some love the tidy, consistent look; others dislike paying monthly fees or following rules about things like paint colors or lawn care.
HOA costs range from as little as $12 per year to several hundred dollars per month, depending on whether you’re paying for little more than signage upkeep or resort-style amenities. If HOAs aren’t your thing, you’ll find older neighborhoods and rural areas—especially east in Manatee County—without them.
This is a big one. Insurance in Florida has climbed steeply—up about 57% in the past decade. Today, homeowners in Sarasota County pay an average of $3,600 annually, and in Manatee County about $3,400.
Why so high? Hurricanes, fraud, litigation, and rising construction costs all play a role. Insurance companies base policies on replacement value, so as labor and materials go up, so do premiums. It’s important to budget for this upfront.
There are trade-offs with both.
New homes: Lower insurance rates, modern layouts, and energy efficiency—but usually farther inland, with extra CDD (Community Development District) fees.
Resale homes: Often closer to the coast, with character and mature landscaping—but insurance costs can be higher, and updates may be needed.
The right choice comes down to your priorities: convenience and modern features, or location and charm.
This is what draws so many people here.
Beaches: Siesta Key’s white quartz sand and crystal-clear water are world famous. Other local beaches are family-friendly, spacious, and often include lifeguards, picnic areas, and free parking.
Arts & Culture: Sarasota isn’t called Florida’s Cultural Coast for nothing—think theaters, opera, ballet, symphony, art galleries, and the Ringling Museum.
Boating: Easy intercoastal access for fishing or cruising, with marinas and boat clubs everywhere.
Shopping & Dining: Hot spots include St. Armands Circle, downtown Sarasota, University Town Center, Waterside in Lakewood Ranch, and downtown Venice.
Outdoor Activities: Golf, pickleball, the Legacy Trail for biking, bird-watching, live music, and countless festivals year-round.
Sarasota is consistently ranked as one of the best retirement destinations, but it also appeals to families and professionals thanks to its mix of recreation, culture, and excellent healthcare.
From November through March, the weather is nearly perfect: highs in the 70s, cool nights, and low humidity. Spring and summer bring heat in the 80s and 90s, plus daily afternoon thunderstorms.
Hurricane season runs August through October. While storms are a concern, residents benefit from plenty of notice and well-established preparation systems.
Sarasota isn’t for everyone—but for many, it checks all the boxes. From award-winning beaches and vibrant culture to boating, shopping, festivals, and year-round sunshine, the area offers a lifestyle that keeps people active and connected.
If you’re weighing the move, start with your budget, your lifestyle preferences, and your must-have amenities. From there, the right neighborhood will become clearer—and Sarasota might just feel like home.
