Thinking about moving to Sarasota? You’re not alone. I did it myself over eight years ago—moved here pretty blindly, not knowing much about the area other than its reputation for sunshine and beaches. People thought I was a little crazy for making the leap, but now that I’ve lived here for nearly a decade, I’ve seen the real Sarasota—beyond the vacation brochures.
So let’s talk honestly about what it’s really like to live in Sarasota. Here are 10 realities that every future resident should know.
Sure, those first few visits had me dreaming of beachside living year-round. And while the beach is never far, most full-time residents aren’t spending every day in the sand. In fact, many locals avoid the beach during peak season. The sweet spot? Late summer and early fall—when the crowds thin out and the water’s warm. But don’t worry, there’s plenty else to enjoy.
If the beach isn’t your thing, Sarasota still offers endless outdoor hobbies. Boating is big here—residents love cruising the water, fishing, or anchoring at sandbars with friends. You’ll also find a vibrant community of kayakers, paddle boarders, golfers, and pickleball players (there are over 90 golf courses and countless pickleball courts!). Walking and biking on trails like the Legacy Trail or across the Ringling Bridge is part of daily life for many.
Here’s something I didn’t expect—not all beaches are the same. Siesta Key, Lido Key, Longboat Key… they each have their own vibe. Whether you’re into lively crowds, peaceful solitude, or upscale beach days, there’s a spot for you. And the sunsets? Unbeatable. Every single one.
A common myth: Sarasota is only for retirees. Not true. This is a fantastic place for families. We’ve got Jungle Gardens, PopStroke (thanks, Tiger Woods!), and soon, the Moat Marine Aquarium with over a million gallons of sea life exhibits and hands-on labs. Plus, more schools and sports fields are popping up across Manatee and Sarasota Counties, making this a welcoming space for kids and teens alike.
Let’s talk hurricanes. Coming from the Midwest, I thought I understood storms. But hurricanes are a different experience—more drawn-out, emotionally taxing, and potentially devastating. Thankfully, most homes today are built to higher safety standards. And what truly stands out? The community response. Neighbors helping neighbors. If you can handle a bit of weather anxiety and are prepared, you’ll be okay. Just know—it’s part of coastal living.
Living here means experiencing the greater Sarasota-Manatee area. From Venice to Lakewood Ranch, Bradenton to the Barrier Islands, there’s so much more to explore. Each area offers its own charm, restaurants, shops, and personality. Whether you’re strolling through Downtown Sarasota or catching live music at Waterside Place, you’ll never run out of places to visit.
Another misconception? That everything shuts down early here. Not true. There’s live music, festivals, dancing, and nightlife across the area—you just have to know where to look. I always recommend the Go Tonight app to find events near you, whether you’re into karaoke or jazz.
Yes, Sarasota has plenty of new-build neighborhoods—but we’re not just rows of lookalike houses. We also have beautiful older homes, tree-lined streets, and neighborhoods filled with character. From charming 1930s cottages to homes with unique architecture from the ‘70s and ‘80s, there’s something for every taste.
Let’s be real. Paradise comes at a price. While Sarasota isn’t the most expensive part of Florida (looking at you, Naples and the Keys), it’s still above the state average. Housing, insurance, and general expenses are higher—but for many, the lifestyle makes it worth it.
At the end of the day, what keeps me here isn’t just the beaches or the restaurants. It’s the community. The people here are friendly, active, and genuinely love where they live. Whether you're moving here to raise a family, retire, or just enjoy the sunshine, there’s a place for you in Sarasota.
